LUMI AI Factory Selects IQM’s Halocene Roadmap for Europe’s First Superconducting Logical Qubit System

Superconducting hardware manufacturer IQM Quantum Computers (NASDAQ: IQMX) has been selected by CSC – IT Center for Science to deploy Europe’s first logical-qubit-capable superconducting quantum computer. Named LUMI-IQ, the system will be installed at CSC’s new data center in Kajaani, Finland, and directly integrated into the LUMI AI Factory environment to create a hybrid HPC-AI-quantum supercomputing platform.

Co-funded by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking and a consortium of participating nations (Finland, Czechia, Norway, and Poland), LUMI-IQ will be delivered via a three-stage upgrade path from IQM’s Halocene product line through 2029. The initial 2027 deployment will feature an IQM Halocene H4 platform equipped with 150 physical qubits and early quantum error correction (QEC) capabilities. Subsequent hardware and control-electronics upgrades in 2028 and 2029 (culminating in the Halocene H5) will lower logical error rates, introduce fast real-time feedback loops, and enable full logical gate operations.

[ LUMI-IQ (Halocene Series) Staged Deployment & QEC Architecture ]Deployment TimelineHardware GenerationQEC & Logical Qubit CapacityPhase 1: 2027• IQM Halocene H4 (150 Physical Qubits)• Initial QEC Code Testing & CalibrationPhase 2: 2028• Hardware Upgrade & Low-Latency Control• Real-Time Error Correction FeedbackPhase 3: 2029• IQM Halocene H5 (Early FTQC Platform)• Up to 9 Logical Qubits (d=3 Surface/Color Code)• Max Depth: d=11 Surface Code / d=9 Color Code• Lattice Surgery & T-Gate Teleportation

Upon final phase completion, LUMI-IQ will support up to 9 fault-tolerant logical qubits using distance-3 surface and color codes, with structural capacity to encode single logical qubits up to distance-11 surface codes and distance-9 color codes. The platform will execute active lattice surgery and T-gate state distillation, giving European academic researchers and industrial users direct local control over fault-tolerant quantum algorithms embedded within an AI supercomputing cluster.

The contract reinforces IQM’s on-premises ownership model and follows its public listing on NASDAQ under ticker IQMX as Europe’s first publicly traded quantum hardware company. By hosting the system at CSC’s Kajaani facility, the EuroHPC JU strengthens sovereign European computing capabilities across drug discovery, materials simulation, and machine learning.

Chalmers University Demonstrates TRIO Pulses for Control-Error-Robust Single-Qubit Gates in Superconducting Processors

Chalmers University of Technology has developed TRIO pulses, a new quantum control framework for superconducting processors. These pulses enable single-qubit gates to maintain high fidelity even with significant control-amplitude miscalibrations and frequency detuning errors. This breakthrough offers a way to reduce recalibration overheads in large-scale quantum processors and has been demonstrated with an X-gate achieving 99.90% fidelity. Open Quantum Launches Native Qrisp Integration for High-Level QPU Execution Across IonQ, Rigetti, IQM, and AQT Hardware

Open Quantum has launched a native Qrisp integration, enabling high-level QPU execution across IonQ, Rigetti, IQM, and AQT hardware. This allows developers to compile and execute Qrisp programs directly on physical QPUs without writing vendor-specific gate-level code. The integration simplifies quantum programming by providing software-engineering abstractions, automated qubit allocation, and memory management. RIKEN Demonstrates High-Fidelity Simultaneous Control of Silicon Spin Qubits Above 99.9% Threshold

Researchers at RIKEN and collaborators have achieved high-fidelity simultaneous control of five silicon spin qubits, maintaining over 99.9% accuracy. They overcame crosstalk caused by AC-Stark shifts through a new calibration protocol, enabling the use of a single microwave control line. This breakthrough meets the fault-tolerant threshold for quantum error correction and paves the way for more scalable quantum computers.
