As we mark the 10th anniversary of Ethereum, the world's leading blockchain platform, a new vision has emerged: Lean Ethereum. This ambitious initiative aims to push the boundaries of performance, security, and decentralization, setting the stage for a new era in blockchain technology.
Defense - Fort Mode
Ethereum has been a beacon of resilience, boasting 100% uptime since its genesis. Its unparalleled client diversity and robust economic security, with over 35.7 million ETH staked, have cemented its position as the bedrock of the internet of value. As the world becomes increasingly dependent on blockchain technology, Ethereum must be prepared to withstand any challenge, whether it's nation-state attacks or the looming threat of quantum computers. This is what we call "fort mode."
Offense - Beast Mode
Ethereum is not just about defense; it's also about scaling and growing. The Ethereum Foundation's Protocol cluster is working tirelessly to "scale L1, scale blobs," a strategic imperative that will unlock new levels of performance and efficiency. Expect significant gains in the next 6-12 months, with the ultimate goal of achieving 1 gigagas/sec on L1 and 1 teragas/sec on L2. This is what we call "beast mode."
Scale vs Decentralization: Why Not Both?
The moon math we need is now tamed, thanks to innovative solutions like real-time zkVMs for lean execution and data availability sampling (DAS) for lean data. These technologies enable us to scale without compromising decentralization, a key principle of blockchain technology.

EVM 2.0 is a minimal, SNARK-friendly instruction set (possibly RISC-V; pronounced "risk five"), boosting performance while preserving EVM compatibility and its network effects.
The Consensus Layer (CL), Data Layer (DL), and Execution Layer (EL) have each been reimagined from first principles, unlocking fort mode and beast mode.

Hash-based cryptography is emerging as the ideal foundation for lean Ethereum, offering a compelling, unified answer to two megatrends reshaping the ecosystem:
