As visitors step into the futuristic lobby, they're transported to the 25th century, where humanity is embarking on its first interstellar mission to explore the distant exoplanet Arcadia. Equipped with wireless Meta Quest 3S headsets, each affixed with noise-canceling headphones, participants embark on a thrilling journey through space and time.
The initial "voyage" segment leverages Felix & Paul's work aboard the International Space Station to create a wildly realistic view of Earth and the galaxy as they depart. As participants enter 262 years of simulated "cryogenic sleep" aboard the Arc, they arrive at what's told to be a man-made orbital centrifuge city above Arcadia, called Cosmopolis.
A Vast and Immersive World
With their headsets on, participants walk around on pathways enclosed by railings, which are real and designed to be visible within the VR experience. The city seems to extend for miles in both their horizontal and vertical vision, with outer space and Arcadia, a planet that's half blue like Earth and half red like Mars, visible through the city's translucent skeleton.
A virtual alien fox with silver fur serves as a guide, often walking ahead of participants and prompting them with its snout to explore different areas. The fox looks adorable, and participants can actually pet and interact with it.
Redirection and Spatial Manipulation
At various points on the journey, it feels as though participants are walking not just side to side, but also uphill and downhill. In reality, they're still inside the same flat facility, but the redirection of the headset's native visual processing features creates a "cheat" for the eyes, making it feel as though the terrain is sloped and curved.
This is made possible by Felix & Paul's use of redirection, which subtly rotates the headset's cameras to the side and upward slightly with each movement. The effect is so convincing that participants can only imagine the processing lift involved in maintaining this effect as dozens of participants move around simultaneously.
