India’s First Dedicated Quantum and AI University Campus Approved for Amaravati

The Andhra Pradesh State government has approved the establishment of India’s first dedicated Quantum and Artificial Intelligence University campus in Amaravati. Set up by the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT)—a Deemed-to-be University under the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY)—the project is backed by a 100% Grant-in-Aid from MeitY totaling ₹730.70 crore ($76.5M USD) over five years.

QRIIB Research Block• 8,250 Total Learners (5-Year Target)• 8.5-Acre Net Zero Permanent Site• Cleanroom Nano-Fab & Cryogenic Labs• 1,650 Formal Degree Candidates• Temp Classes Start Sept 2026• Quantum Photonics & HPC Data Centers• 6,600 Certification / Skill Trainees

Quantum Research, Innovation, and Incubation Block (QRIIB)

Formally greenlit during a Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA) meeting led by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, the 8.5-acre permanent campus will feature a specialized 1.25 lakh sq. ft. Quantum Research, Innovation, and Incubation Block (QRIIB). The center will house quantum computing and communication systems, quantum photonics labs, cleanroom nanofabrication infrastructure, cryogenic testbeds, and startup incubation facilities.

The academic curriculum aligns with major national deep-tech programs, including the National Quantum Mission, the IndiaAI Mission, and the India Semiconductor Mission:

Degree & Research Programs: Offering undergraduate (UG), postgraduate (PG), doctoral (PhD), and executive diplomas.

Specialized Disciplines: Courses cover Quantum Computing, Quantum Communication & Security, AI/Machine Learning, Data Science, VLSI, Chip Design, Semiconductor Fabrication, Assembly/Testing/Packaging (ATMP), Embedded Systems, and High-Performance Computing (HPC).

Inter-Institutional Network: NIELIT will collaborate with regional academic and engineering hubs, including IIT Tirupati, IIIT Sri City, Andhra University, and JNTU.

Phased Launch and Sustainable Campus Design

To avoid delay while the permanent campus is built, academic coursework and advanced technical training will begin in September 2026 at a temporary setup within Acharya Nagarjuna University in Guntur.

Once completed, the permanent Amaravati facility will operate as a solar-powered Net Zero campus featuring a 500-bed residential complex, EV charging infrastructure, smart classrooms, and scientific waste management. The university projects an annual intake reaching nearly 4,000 learners by its fifth year.

DARPA has selected Atom Computing, Diraq, IBM, and IonQ for Stage C of its Quantum Benchmarking Initiative (QBI) to verify the performance of their fault-tolerant quantum computing architectures. This stage involves direct physical testing and empirical validation of their hardware, aiming to assess their potential for utility-scale operation by 2033. The chosen companies represent diverse qubit technologies, including neutral atoms, silicon spin qubits, superconducting transmons, and trapped ions. Fermilab SQMS Center Identifies Microscopic Origins of Qubit Performance Variance Across Superconducting Transmons

Researchers at Fermilab's SQMS Center and collaborators identified microscopic material defects causing performance variations in superconducting qubits. Their study found that nanoscale fabrication geometries, surface oxides, and energy relaxation times are directly correlated. Specifically, single-nanometer shifts in surface oxide thickness, substrate trench depths below 20 nanometers, and sidewall etch profiles can cause up to a twofold variation in qubit performance.
