Breaking Down Language Barriers: Ethereum.org's Translation Program Hits Milestones
In a significant push towards global accessibility, the Ethereum.org Translation Program has made tremendous strides since its inception in 2019. With over 2,000 community members contributing to the initiative, a staggering 2.8 million words have been translated across 37 languages. This remarkable achievement is a testament to the power of collaboration and the importance of language in bridging cultural divides.
Growing Traffic and Expanding Resources
While English remains the primary language viewed on the site, accounting for 88% of total page views, traffic to translated pages has more than tripled since last year. This growth is a direct result of the Translation Program's efforts to make ethereum.org content more accessible to a broader audience. The program has also expanded its resources, including the creation of content versions 2.0+, which has seen 19 languages translated to version 2.0 or above.
New Initiatives and Improvements
In a recent development, the Translation Program has introduced new content versions, which include pages on ethereum.org that have recently been added to the website or significantly updated. This change allows translators to address high-impact content, such as the homepage, in more approachable chunks of work. The new content versions are divided into six categories, including homepage and site navigation, use Ethereum and key Learn pages, use case and Contributing pages, developer documentation, and general pages and additional Learn pages.
Looking Ahead: Expanding Scope and Recognizing Contributors
As the Translation Program continues to grow, it is expanding its scope beyond ethereum.org content to include other important content in the Ethereum ecosystem. The program is exploring the option of translating relevant blog posts from the Ethereum Foundation blog and is seeking contributions from the community. To recognize the hard work of translators, the program is introducing a POAP program, which will Floyd claim different POAPs based on the number of words translated this year.
Future Plans and Initiatives
In Q4 this year, the Translation Program plans to add translator leaderboards and an acknowledgment page to the Translation Program page, which will allow it to feature all contributors on the website and highlight outstanding translators. The program will also be exploring issuing credentials and other forms of endorsement for key contributors. Moving forward, the program will continue to build out its translator resources, including documentation detailing the workflow and translation process, with the aim of supporting other translation initiatives in the Ethereum ecosystem.
