Ethereum.org Translatathon Recap: A Community Effort to Democratize Access to Ethereum
In a bid to make Ethereum more accessible to people worldwide, the Ethereum.org Translation program has been working tirelessly to translate the website's content into multiple languages. The program has seen significant growth, with over 6 billion non-English speakers now able to access Ethereum.org. To further accelerate this effort, the Ethereum.org team organized the first-ever Translatathon, a translation competition that brought together participants from around the world.
What is a Translatathon?
A Translatathon is a translation competition similar to a hackathon. It requires no coding skills or technical background, making it accessible to anyone who is bilingual and has some basic knowledge about Ethereum. The event allows participants to learn about Ethereum while translating the website content, helping to make this content more accessible and competing for prizes at the same time.
How Did the Translatathon Go?
The Translatathon received an impressive 621 applications, with 217 participants translating into 56 different languages. The total amount of translated content during the competition was 1.47 million words, making August the most productive month for the Translation program yet. This is equivalent to ~50% of all content translated in the program through all of 2022.
Goals Achieved
The Translatathon aimed to raise awareness about the importance of localizing content, onboard new contributors to the program, incentivize translations into less active languages, and give back to contributors. The event achieved all these goals, with:
- Over 486 new members joining the ethereum.org project in Crowdin
- Participants translating into 56 different languages, including 7 new languages the website is not available in yet
- A total prize pool of $30,000 + other prizes
- More than 70% of all Translatathon participants eligible for some sort of prize
Languages with High Activity
The general distribution of active languages was very diverse, with a total of 56 languages and 31 languages with 2 or more participants. Some languages stood out, including:
- Turkish: 20 translators, 167k translated words
- Indonesian: 8 translators, 196k translated words
- Spanish: 15 translators, 116k translated words
Results
The winners across the Individuals and Teams categories were:
- Individuals:
- 1st place: MGETH (Spanish)
- 2nd place: Satglow (Hungarian)
- 3rd place: wosek_ (Polish)
- Teams:
- 1st place: sinasi (Turkish)
- 2nd place: Translation Volunteers (Turkish)
- 3rd place: TME (Persian)

While the Translatathon is over, the ethereum.org translation community is always working on translating the website content and improving accessibility on the site for non-English speakers.
