Unlocking the Potential of Ethereum: Insights from the Community Survey
As the Ethereum community continues to grow and evolve, it's essential to understand the needs and perspectives of its members. In November, we conducted a comprehensive survey to gauge how we're doing, what can be improved, and how best we can engage with the community as we move forward towards the genesis block release in March. With 286 responses, representing 7.8% of the current Ethereum Reddit population, we've gained valuable insights into the community's thoughts and opinions.
Geographic Distribution of the Community
The survey revealed a predominantly Western-centric distribution of respondents, with 43% hailing from North America, 40% from Europe, 10% from Asia, 5% from Oceana, and 2% from South America. This highlights the need for greater international engagement and outreach, particularly in emerging markets. To address this, we're exploring ways to seed more international Ethereum meetups, which can be found on our website.
Transparency and Communication
Transparency is a crucial aspect of the Ethereum community, and our survey respondents overwhelmingly agree that we're doing a good job in this regard. However, we recognize that there's always room for improvement. To that end, we're working on a refresh of the ethereum.org website, which will provide more content and information as we approach the genesis block release.
Financial Transparency
We've always strived to provide the community with as much information as possible about our financial situation. The survey results suggest that this approach is well-received, and we'll continue to share updates on how we intend to use the revenue generated from the Ether sale.
Use Cases and Applications
While the survey respondents identified a range of potential use cases for Ethereum, we recognize that we've only scratched the surface of its potential. Everyday, we're speaking with developers and entrepreneurs who have innovative ideas for implementing Ethereum, many of which are new to us. To support this growth, we're working on a Udemy/Codacademy-like utility that will enable people to learn how Ethereum works and how to implement their ideas.
User Experience and Interface
The user experience and interface are critical factors in user adoption. To address this, we're working on a "Ðapp Navigator" called Mist, which will provide a seamless and intuitive experience for users. We're also exploring ways to make the installation process easier, including the development of binaries with internal update systems.
Developer Tools and Resources
We're committed to providing developers with the tools and resources they need to build on Ethereum. To that end, we're working on a project called Mix, which will support documentation, a compiler, and debugger integration. We're also exploring ways to make our documentation more accessible and user-friendly.
Mobile and IoT
As the number of smartphone users continues to grow, it's essential that we provide a mobile-friendly experience for Ethereum. To address this, we're working on a mobile light client and exploring ways to integrate Ethereum with IoT platforms, such as IBM and Samsung's joint project, Adept.
Governance and Decision-Making
The survey results highlight the importance of governance and decision-making in the Ethereum community. We recognize that this is a critical aspect of our development and will continue to work on ways to facilitate transparent and inclusive decision-making processes.
