This is where the Core Developer Apprenticeship Program (CDAP) comes in – a unique initiative designed to help people find their way into core protocol development.
What is CDAP?
CDAP is a protocol-support initiative led by Piper Merriam, a core developer who has been instrumental in the development and maintenance of the Ethereum protocol. The program aims to provide first-hand experience of how core protocol development works, with support as you learn about the protocols that Ethereum is built upon. By participating in CDAP, you'll have direct access to the core developer community, the opportunity to work on real projects with real impact on the Ethereum protocols, and the chance to contribute to the development of a multi-billion dollar protocol.
The First Cohort: A Success Story
The first cohort, or "cohort zero," of CDAP kicked off two months ago, and the results have been impressive. Around 15 developers have been exploring, learning, researching, and contributing to the Ethereum protocol, with many of them coming in with little to no prior knowledge about the inner workings of Ethereum. These developers have already made significant contributions, including:
- Working on an alternate method of documenting and specifying the Ethereum protocol
- Researching how to modify or remove the SELFDESTRUCT opcode
- Helping build ZKSync
- Building out new peer-to-peer networks for the portal network
- Writing their own implementation of the EVM

With the concept validated, we are now looking to kick off the second cohort of CDAP. This is an exciting opportunity for developers who want to get involved in core protocol development and contribute to the development of a protocol that has the potential to create a more fair and equitable future for humanity.
